Roberto „Robbie“ Hacaturyan is a cross-genre multi-percussionist - a polyglot in the language of rhythm, oscillating between tradition and innovation.

The son of an Armenian father and a Sicilian mother got in touch with rhythms at an early age. Robbie's curiosity for percussion languages led him to study in Accra, Havana, New York, Salvador Bahia and several cities of the Middle East. As a result he was able to steadily expand his stylistic repertoire and collaborate with artists from various genres and different countries. Over the years he has taken part in numerous live and studio productions.

Robbie's ambition is to spice up existing pieces and enrich them with new accents and colors. He provides an extra level to the classic drum set or he replaces it all together with a lighter hybrid setup. He likes to break with patterns and reach across borders - combining the traditional with the modern and the archaic with the futuristic.

For some years now Robbie has also been the MC & singer of the Cuban-Swiss band Lariba, with whom he toured in Europe and the US. In addition, having trained as an ethnomusicologist and cultural promoter, Robbie regularly takes on assignments and mandates in the field of cultural management and education.

Roberto "Robbie" Hacaturyan ist ein genreübergreifender Multiperkussionist - ein Polyglott  in den Sprachen des Rhythmus, der sich zwischen Tradition und Innovation bewegt.

Als musikverrückter Sohn eines Armeniers und einer Sizilianerin kam er früh mit den Rhythmen aus dem Kulturkreis seines Vaters in Berührung.

Robbie’s grenzenlose Neugier für die perkussive Sprache der Rhythmen führte ihn später zu ausgedehnten Studienaufenthalten in Ghana, Havanna, New York, Salvador da Bahia und dem Nahen Osten.

Dadurch konnte er seinen stilistischen Fundus stetig erweitern, über die Jahre mit KünstlerInnen verschiedenster Sparten zusammen arbeiten und in zahlreichen Live- und/ oder Studioproduktionen mitwirken (siehe oben).

Robbie verfolgt das Ziel, bestehende Stücke zu bereichern, ihnen bestimmte Akzente und Farben zu geben, sie zu „salzen und zu pfeffern“ und eine zusätzliche Ebene zum klassischen Schlagzeug herzustellen. Oder aber er übernimmt dessen tragende Funktion in einem hybriden Setup, das sich zwischen erdiger Perkussion und leichtem Drum-Set bewegt. Es reizt ihn immer wieder aufs Neue, bestehende Grenzen aufzubrechen - Traditionelles mit Modernem oder Archaisches mit Futuristischem zu verbinden; etablierte Muster neu auszulegen.

Robbie war lange auch MC & Sänger der Band Lariba, mit der er in Europa und den USA auf Tournee war. Neben der Tätigkeit als Musiker, übernimmt er als ausgebildeter Musikethnologe und Kulturvermittler immer wieder Mandate im kulturellen Bereich.
